I grew up on the east end of Long Island, NY, surrounded by farms and ocean and the beauty of the natural landscape. Memories of planting bright red geraniums with my grandmother were the first spark for my love of flowers. In high school and college I was lucky enough to work in the flower green houses and cut flower fields of a local, family-owned farm. I learned so much about flowers from this experience. But, it was not until years later after a visit to the farm that I realized how much my time spent there had imbedded in my soul. I had chosen a career as an art historian and art educator, but after that visit I knew it was time to return to flowers.
I had lots of ideas about which flower path to take. At the same time, I was caring for my mom who had a long-term illness and who eventually moved into an assisted living facility. I saw first hand how small acts of kindness and interaction sparked healing and joy. Additionally, sustainability and the health of our climate have always been important to me, and I’ve always tried to make small steps to reduce my impact.
It is out of all of these thoughts, emotions, and interests that ReFlowering was born.
